Naruko kokeshi dolls originate from Naruko,a hot spring resort area in the tohoku region of japan,they are a very popular kokeshi doll,there are many different artisans making these types of kokeshi dolls,also in the same region it is famous for lacquerware.The naruko style has records of being around in 1862 maybe it was made earlier but this is the earliest on record they have.

Naruko dolls are still being made and sold today in the hot spring resort,many of the shops are owned by the kokeshi dolls artisans and you can actually see them skillfully making these beautiful dolls.

I am writing a a small guide about traditional kokeshi doll type in japan,there are 11 different types of traditional kokeshi dolls,shapes and patterns are particular to a certain area which they come from.

The eleven types are Tsuchiyu, Toggatta, Yajiro, Naruko, Sakunami, Yamagata, Kijiyama, Nanbu, Tsugaru, Zao-takayu, and Hijioro,these eleven different types of traditional kokeshi dolls are also names of the areas which the dolls originate from.
